Maria Lopes "Anthony Lopes, remembers his parents Gaetano (Tom) and Maria Lopes’ time as proprietors of Tom’s Fruit Shop in Northbridge, Sydney. Gaetano (Tom) Lopes came to Sydney in 1927 from Salina, one of the Aeolian Islands off Sicily, when he was fourteen years old. Soon thereafter, he began working in his uncle’s fruit shop in Charring Cross, near Randwick. Tom developed an affinity for fruit and vegetables, which stayed with him for the rest of his life. It was his dream to own his own fruit shop. |
