Maria Mazzaferro In this shop we traded as 'A & G Canturi Fruit and Vegetables'. When we bought the shop in June 1974, it was in very bad condition. We cleaned it up, started bringing in fresh fruit and vegetables and gave the customers good service. It kept us very busy until we sold it in 1976. Elvira Gerardis "It was hard work for both Giuseppe and Elvira Gerardis working in a fruit shop with three young children under the age of five. The shop would be open every day at 7:30am and closed at 11pm, after the Marina Picture show, and was forced to close between 10:30-12:30 on a Sunday morning for Church services. Joe (Giuseppe) would travel to and from the Sydney Markets by bus, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning with hessian bags to put his produce in. Unable to carry these bags back to the shop himself, Joe would pay to have his fruit and vegetables delivered. |
