Elia Cancian "Antonino Raffaele was born 7 June 1908, in Messina, Italy, brother of the Italian Naval Officer Captain Cico Raffaele. Antonino migrated to Australia in 1928, and was later naturalised in 1933. Soon thereafter, he opened a fruit shop in Walker St, North Sydney, operating from 1934 to 1940. During WWII Antonino worked as a hand on Orange Farm, Somersby, in the Central Coast of New South Wales. In 1946, with his brother Gesepino, Antonino opened the “Raffaelle Bros.” fruit shop in Kings Cross. Changes to Darlinghurst Rd caused the shop to close |
