Soon after his arrival from Panarea, Italy, in 1933, Bartalo Tesoriero purchased his fruit shop in Bondi, Sydney.  Together with his wife Leduccia (nee La Spina), born in Australia in 1928, Bartalo operated the shop, selling fruit and vegetables to local clientele.  Running the shop also involved daily visits to the markets.  During this time, the family lived in the residence above the store.  Bartalo and Leduccia sold their fruit shop in 1979, and it has since become a florist.

Saverio and Maria Panebianco were born in Calabria, Italy. They bought their fruit shop in Bondi on 23 November, 1955, on Maria’s 21st birthday, for the sum of £1600. Their first child, Ralph, was born 15 January 1957, and the family lived in quarters upstairs from the shop. Both Maria and Saverio were involved in the running of the store: Maria would open the shop at 7:30am every day, and Saverio would visit the market at 4:30am Monday to Saturday. The demands of the shop meant that there was little time for social life and initially, Maria and Saverio struggled with English.
