Anne (a Dutch girl) Dominic and Lena had this shop in Plumer Road Rose Bay for about 6 years. During that time Dominic's brother, John Stratte, also had a fruit shop in Rose Bay; so did his sister, Francis Antico. Dominic and Lena lived in a flat in the block of flats that sat above the fruit shop, overlooking the golf course. Their first daughter, Grace, was born while they were living in Rose Bay. In 1961 they moved from Rose Bay to Blakehurst, where Dominic then went to work in the Stratte family Fruit Market in Port Hacking Road, near Box Road, Miranda. Josephine Binding The shop at Old South Head Road Rose Bay was the fifth fruit shop owned by this Picone family. Gaetano Picone came to Sydney from Lipari, in the Aeolian Islands, in April of 1922. His wife Concetta, followed him to Australia in 1924. The first fruit shop he owned was in Bondi Road, Bondi, in the early 1920's. Two daughters, Annunciata (Nancy) and Giusepina (Josie), were born during this time. This shop was sold in the late 1920's and they moved to the second fruit shop in Oxford Street, Bondi Junction. Mrs Maria Basile Lianna Taranto writes: The fruit shop was my mother and father's 4th fruit shop. They had previously owned ones in Cremorne, Brighton-Le-Sands and Panania. They only stayed here for 3 years, but had been in the other shops since 1944. This shop proved hard work: a combination of the fussy customers who apparently were notorious for picking fruit at the bottom of the stack, often causing an 'avalanche'! Also the constant deliveries of fruit and veg to customers' houses were necessary to save the slow business. Finally they sold it and never returned to the fruit shop business. Parisi's Food Hall

Anne Stratte John Stratte and Alf Scognamiglio opened their fruit shop in Rose Bay during the 1950s. The fruit shop was a family-run business with Anne Stratte (nee Scognamiglio) also assisting to manage the store. The proprietors were required to work long hours to ensure the success of their business: from daily market visits at 4:30am, and serving customers until the shop closed at 10pm each night, all the while maintaining neat presentation of the fresh produce. John Stratte Together with his wife, Frances and their children, Vince Antico operated his fruit shop in Rose Bay during the 1950s. The store was very much a family-run business: Vince was also assisted by John Stratte, proprietor of a fruit shop at 734 New South Head Rd, as well as other relatives. Running the fruit shop required long hours on behalf of its owner and his employees: from daily 4:30am market visits, and serving customers until the shop closed at 11pm, all the while maintaining neat presentation of the fresh produce. Mary Vigilante John Vigilante migrated to Australia at eighteen years of age from Calabria in 1938. He purchased his first fruit shop at North Bondi in 1947 and his wife Mary describes the shop as ‘nicely outfitted’ for the fruit, vegetables and drinks they sold. Typically, after a 4am visit to the City Markets, the shop opened at 7am and closed around 10pm at night. The shop was open later on the weekends. Mary Vigilante will always remember her customers at that time as “very nice people, [who] treated us with respect.” John sold the shop in North Bo |
