Sydneys Italian Fruitshops

Giuseppe Paino migrated to Australia from Salina, Aeolian Islands at the very end of the 19th century, c1898-99.  Giuseppe bought his fruit shop in the heart of the city of Sydney in 1902, operating a mixed business of fruit and vegetables, drinks and chocolates, for a clientele of city workers.  His family lived at the back of the shop.  The shop was sold around 1910 when the Paino family returned to Italy for a holiday.  Giuseppe died in 1935 in Salina, Italy.  The history of Giuseppe’s fruit shop was retold by his daughter-in-law to her children.
