Sabbato Vincenzo (Vince) Lombardo first migrated to Australia from Martone, Reggio Calabria, c1928, and after returning to Italy briefly, settled permanently here in 1933. Around this time, Vince rented a property from the Anglican Church and established his fruit shop in Glebe. In 1936, Vince’s wife, Maria Lombardo, also from Calabria, and their three year old daughter Jess, joined him in Australia, living at the back of the store. The shop sold solely fruit and vegetables, as there was a small goods shop next door on the corner (visible in photo MP-1). With no truck, Vince had everything delivered, at times relying on the help of neighbouring family and shop owners the Tesorieros. Both families remain friends to this day. In 1965, Vince sold the shop, and today it is a restaurant.
My family is related by marriage to the Lombardo family. My brother John Steinhour married Jessie Lombardo, Vince & Maria's eldest daughter. We spent many a happy night at the back of the fruit shop whilst the Lombardo's lived there. They were a most hospitable & loving family & we are privileged to have known them.
